It’s hard to go wrong with a pair of these Sony speakers. Sony SSCS5 3-Way 3-Driver Bookshelf Speaker System (They can also be mounted.) But they’re not only aesthetically pleasing, they serve a purpose, and help cut down on resonance at any volume, as you pick up new nuances in your old favorites and feel like you’re hearing them for the first time all over again.īuy Cambridge Audio SX-60 Bookshelf Speaker $369.00Ģ. Design-wise, their steadfast, boxy shaped MDF cabinets look great in any space, and fit easily against walls or in corners. These connect via speaker cables, and are easy to thread the wires through on the back, locking them in place. The low end hits hard, with a punchy clarity, along with mids and highs that aren’t muffled or lost in the mix. No sub in your setup? No problem – for its size, the bass response on the SX-60s is unreal. When you play a record, you’ll notice new depth and detail in songs you’ve heard hundreds of times, and will want to replay everything in your vinyl collection just to experience it on these. Whether you’re using these with your turntable or TV, each of Cambridge Audio’s 100-watt speaker’s 6.5-inch woofer fills the entire room with rich sound, working best in a medium to large area. But these four choices provide a powerful and pristine listening experience while getting the most out of your money (and your music collection). The best turntable speakers don’t always come necessarily cheap, and some specialized models can reach way up into the multi-thousand dollar range. The best bet is to raise the speaker up, either on a stand or feet, to decouple it from the surface it’s sitting. Though many have “bookshelf” in the title, placing them on an actual bookshelf along with your turntable can be counterintuitive, as it moves and shakes the surface it’s on, making bass and mids muffled, and even causing the record to skip. Not just for optimal sound, but to cut down on vibrations. And while sound is most important when pairing with your turntable for gorgeous sound, looks play into it as well – something that’s going to have a timeless design and pair well visually with your setup too.Īlso before buying, take note of where the pair will be placed in your room. Thanks to improved audio engineering over the years, a mid-sized or even small speaker can have some seriously strong drivers inside. Keep in mind that when it comes to their size, larger turntable speakers aren’t always automatically better. Some players already include preamps in the unit, but replacing them with a high-quality preamp can sometimes give you greater control on getting your music just right. It’s not always a total dealbreaker, but if you want to get the most out of your records, these are a huge help. We’ve picked our favorite ones here, which help take the sound from the player’s stylus and turn it into a signal that can safely and clearly play out of your speakers. In some cases you’ll also need a preamp to play records through your new speakers. But if you’re an aspiring audiophile, best to stick with wired options. For the casual listener, it might not be a big deal. The benefit of Bluetooth is its wireless convenience, but because it’s a compressed format, you’ll inevitably be losing some audio quality. Other options include RCA wires, which are color-coated for a smooth setup, and Bluetooth connectivity on the newer models. The most classic method on older players as well as modern ones is copper speaker wire. There are a few different ways that these can connect up to your turntable unit, so be sure to check the back of your player to see what your options are before buying. With hundreds of brands and even more types of models available online, even knowing where to begin is enough to overwhelm anyone. The search for turntable speakers, especially for a beginner, can be a daunting task. Two of the best things about "DREAMGIRLS" turned out to be the show-stopping performances of Eddie Murphy and Jennifer Hudson as R&B singer, James “Thunder” Early and the Dreams’ real talent Effie White. By the time Lorrell became convinced that her long affair with the mercurial James had been a mistake, Rose gave a very poignant performance. Fortunately, her performance improved when her character matured. I must admit that Rose’s portrayal of the young, star-struck Lorrell seemed a little hammy and unconvincing. Another character connected to the Early role was Lorrell Robinson, portrayed by Anika Noni Rose. He was his usual competent self as the more conservative manager of Eddie Murphy’s character, James “Thunder” Early. It was good to see Glover in a substantial role again, after so many years. Knowles proved that she could be a competent actress – especially in two scenes that feature her character’s (lead singer Deena Jones) growing resentment toward Taylor’s control over her career and life. in a rather subtle, yet intimidating manner. I was especially surprised to see Foxx (usually seen in comedy and action roles and an Oscar winner for his portrayal of Ray Charles) portrayed villainous record producer Curtis Taylor Jr. Foxx, Knowles and Glover all did competent jobs in their respective roles. The cast, which included Jamie Foxx, Beyonce Knowles, Eddie Murphy, Anika Noni Rose, Danny Glover and Jennifer Hudson were all excellent. The movie not only possessed a rich, in-depth look at the music industry for African-Americans in the 1960s and 70s, it can also boast fine performances and a very unusual direction. Needless to say that when I first saw the movie, I realized that my sister had not exaggerated. Just recently, I had watched "DREAMGIRLS" for the umpteenth time. Since I had yet to see "DREAMGIRLS" at the time, I began to wonder if my sister – who had first recommended the movie – had exaggerated its good qualities. This critic and others went on to say that although "DREAMGIRLS" was a pretty good movie, it lacked the qualities to be considered as a nominee for Best Picture. Several movie critics, including one for “The New York Times” claimed that this might be the case. Was it possible that "DREAMGIRLS" had failed to live up to its hype? The movie, based upon the 1981 Broadway musical, had already won plenty of accolades – including a Best Musical/Comedy Picture and two other Golden Globe awards. When I had first learned that the eight Academy Award nominations for the 2006 musical, "DREAMGIRLS", did not include one for Best Picture and a Best Director nod for Bill Condon, it seemed pretty odd to me. If your network or Internet connection has a lot of hiccups and dropped packets, RPM offers better insight than a latency snapshot. Thus latency may show you the round-trip speed average over a few seconds and RPM provides a total number of data round-trips performed one after another over a minute. Measuring RPM requires a longer test than that typically used for latency. RPM is another way to think about latency, as it’s the sequential number of operations that can be performed per minute. Closer to 100 ms and responsiveness becomes low and video calls or gameplay may stutter or become herky-jerky. Latency of a few to a few tens of milliseconds (ms) is ideal for interactive communications and games. Latency tracks how long in seconds it takes for a data packet sent by a tool to be received by a service on the other end, a response generated, and then received back by the tool. RPM stands for “round-trips per minute,” a measure closely related to latency. Such tools include Speedtest and the macOS Monterey command-line tool networkQuality. It could be that, without programmed-in emotions, they wouldn't "feel like" anything. But a scenario in which emotion-void sentiency leads to no action may be equally (possibly more) plausible. But how likely is it really that a sentient machine would turn against humankind? As biological beings, we seek pleasure and avoid pain, but would conscious thought propel action in the absence of even the most basic emotions? And if machines did feel emotions, where would those come from? In many fiction stories, feelings and drive come with (machine) self-awareness as a matter of course. But as a neuroscientist, my main question-and I think the stickiest point in the story–is what motivates AM.Įllison's protagonist speaks about "the innate loathing that all machines had always held for the weak soft creatures who had built them" as a way of explanation for AM's actions as a new sentient being. Those are heavy matters to ponder as a reader, and as a human being. They are, both of them, conscious enough to realize they don't want to hate and are. They are trapped in the most sublime sense. Because they don't want to hate, but they must. And that hatred fuels their hatred even more. Ellison's powerful prose conveys a message of hope in the midst of despair, of resilience in the face of horror, and of generosity when everything has been lost and there is nothing left to give. If you're familiar with 40k I usually equate AM with Angron. AM has annihilated humanity, and kept five survivors to amuse itself in an endless cat-and-mouse game which only AM can win. The wrath that AM-the sentient supercomputer in Ellison's tale, as in "I think therefore I AM"-feels for humans is god-like in its scope. One frequent element in these stories is the machines' contempt for, or outright rage against, their human creators. The human batteries powering up The Matrix. Terminator traveling back in time to kill Sarah Connor's unborn child. That thought experiment has led to a number of dystopian fiction scenarios: Hal 9000 versus Dave in 2001: A Space Odyssey. In other words, there are no theoretical impediments to machine consciousness. They could occur-or be implemented-in an artificial substrate. Many contemporary neuroscientists believe that the requisite qualities enabling consciousness in the brain are not necessarily unique to biological tissue.
